There are a number of statutes which govern the sale, purchase, disposition or defacement of identification marks of a firearm. Most are felonies.

It is a Class 2 felony to deface the serial number of a firearm, and a Class 3 felony to possess such a firearm. An unlawful sale is defined at 720 ILCS 5/24-3. The most serious charge is gunrunning, which involves the unlawful sale of 3 or more firearms. This offense is a Class X felony with a 10-50 year sentencing range.
